My brother is a RETARD.

So, I've been wanting to steal the Prime disc of the Metroid soundtrack I got my brother so I can make myself a copy. I managed to jack it after he went to work this afternoon and I gave it a listen before copying it. I get to track 15 (Magmoor Caverns) and I started hearing this clipping sound, but it almost sounds like it's part of the song so I didn't pay much attention to it. Then I heard a very noticable skip in the music, but it only happened once so I still didn't pay it any mind. Then I get to the next track (Phendrana Drifts 1- one of my favorite songs in the entire game) and the clipping's STILL there and it skips again.

My first reaction is to blame my computer since I had the disc in the CD ROM drive. Groaning because I figured the drive was screwing up (like everything else on this stupid machine), I pop out the CD and try it in my walkman. Track 15, still clipping. Track 16, still clipping. Track 17? Yep, clipping. Track 18- HOLY CRAP I can't even get ten seconds into it because it's skipping so bad my walkman can hardly play it.

So I pull it out and take a look. I'll be darned if the little twerp hasn't already put a big SCRATCH on it. Not to mention, it's freaking COVERED in dust and fingerprints. He's almost 18 and he STILL can't take care of his stuff.

Cleaning the dust and fingerprints off fixed the problems with tracks 15-18, but that still left the issue of the nice big scratch, which not only makes tracks 25-35 clip like CRAZY, but also makes the last five tracks completely unplayable. And that means I can't copy it.

So, currently I'm yanking every individual track I can off this thing before he completely destroys it.

I still can't believe he screwed this thing up already.

How deep is the scratch. Those Disc Doctor (and other similar devices) CD repair kits can repair most shallow scratches.

Also, are you sure it's only one scratch? One scratch shouldn't be capable of making the first five tracks unplayable and making 25-35 skip. Check and see if there are any other scratches (or, hopefully, only dust and fingerprint).

CDs are read from the inside toward the outside so look for bad scratching near the inside rim and more scratching closer to the outside rim (where exactly depends on the length of the tracks).

The big scratch is about a half-inch long. I can't tell how deep it is but it's pretty noticeable.

And, yeah, when I looked closer there's another spot on the outside where there's a lot of really tiny scratches.

I'll tell my brother to get a repair kit...after chewing him out for nearly ruining a brand new CD. :D I really wish he'd learn to take better care of things...
