You know what I find offensive? People who get offended for me.
Here's an example: Adventure Gamers just posted their review of Autumn Moon's (one of the many companies belonging to former Lucasarts employees) newest game Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island. It's actually not that bad as far as AG reviews go (they like to err on the side of disliking everything), but there was one thing that bothered me about it- the reviewer mentions that he dislikes the 3D character models, especially compared to the hand-painted backgrounds. This is all well and good except his main beef with them are the female characters and their huge... tracts of land. But it's not that he's offended by them, oh no- he makes a rather passive aggressive remark about women making up a large portion of the adventure game audience and that having female characters with amble bosoms is offensive to them.
First of all, nobody asked me if I found huge boobs offensive. For the most part, I don't. Second of all, they're cartoon characters. Take a look at some of the screenshots- ALL of the characters designs are greatly exaggerated. Should all fat people who play adventure games be offended by the bumbling, comic relief fat guy? And what about the super muscular men with shoulders that are wide enough to sit on?
Not that I'm saying nobody should be offended by the female character designs. I just find a lot more offensive to be told that I should just because I happen to be a female adventure gamer. Especially considering the person telling me this is a dude.
On another note, I don't recall anyone getting up in arms when Autumn Moon's last game came out starring a cartoon vampire lady (Which reminds me, I haven't played that yet when I've been wanting to). It feels like this complaint is just an AG reviewer grasping at straws to find flaws in the game, which they have been wont to do in the past. For example, their review of Telltale's Sam & Max episode Chariots of the Dogs got a glowing 5-star review, and their only problem with it? "They'll probably never be able to top this! Ever!" So take that, Telltale and your lousy perfection. Jeez.
And that is your rant about stuff that nobody cares about for the day.

Date: 2010-02-23 05:12 pm (UTC)See, I don't get it. If the creators of the game were using a big busty boobie'd babe as a "this is how you girls should look and those who don't are worthless" sort of a thing, then yeah it's offensive, but if it's just a character who happens to be big boob'd then...what's the problem. Yeah, a character having big boobs because they're the sort of character who has big boobs is very much not offensive.
Besides, if everybody's comically exaggerated then why are the comically exaggerated boobs bad? I dunno, it just pisses me off when people look for things to get offended about. Just...why? If something is actually offensive, then you don't need to go looking for things to spoil your own fun on.
Also? Ooooh, fun looking adventure game about vampires and other fun looking game about pirate ghosts...DO WANT.

Date: 2010-02-23 07:25 pm (UTC)YES. This! Exactly! It's just... useless nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking. Surely there are more productive things you could be doing instead? Like... I dunno, playing the game?
I've heard that both games are pretty good! Ghost Pirates is brand new and isn't out anywhere outside of Europe yet, though.
