Book: On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers
DO YOU LIKE PIRATES?
DO YOU LIKE VOODOO?
DO YOU LIKE ALTERNATE HISTORY FICTION?
Even if you don’t like any of the above, you should still read this book. It takes place in the Caribbean in the 18th century and is essentially a historical fiction novel about Blackbeard… and voodoo and the fountain of youth if it existed. :D The story follows a guy who left Britain to confront his uncle in the Caribbean about his father’s inheritance, but gets just a little sidetracked when SUDDENLY PIRATES, and he ends up joining their crew mostly against his will and from then on it just gets weirder and weirder, what with ghosts and zombie pirates and Blackbeard having spooky powers. Like I said before, the main character is just as clueless about everything as you are, so it's like you're getting the same crash course on piracy and voodoo that he is, which is really neat. There’s sea battles and exploring through creepy swamps and just about anything you’d expect in a pirate story and then some. It definitely buckles some swashes and shivers some timbers. I am itching to read more of Powers stuff because this book is so good. PIRATES ARRRR.
Ebook: Wowio.com
Haha I’m cheating: this is pretty much a giant archive of ebooks. I'm pretty sure everything on here is free and they have a ton of stuff. I actually kinda feel bad since I haven't been there in a while and I haven't seen what's new, but it's a pretty cool place and definitely worth checking out.
Fanfic: Respawn of the Dead Part One Part Two
The premise of this fic is essentially “Team Fortress 2 with zombies”, which is an awesome concept in its own right, but the author took it one step further. Of course it’s got plenty of action and comedy (ZOMBIE COWS), but it’s a lot more like a psychological horror/drama than anything- the main focus is how each member of the RED team copes with the looming zombie apocalypse bearing down on their side of 2fort, as well as some other things that I won’t spoil. The author does a great job fleshing out the characters and making them believeable, which is amazing considering that the TF2 cast is a nameless, goofball, redshirt army. There are many, many times where you feel bad for these poor guys, and it gets very scary and suspenseful in places. Also it's finished! How many long fanfics ever get finished? That alone makes it worth checking out.
Yesterday I gave my first library tour. I actually managed to remember almost everything I was supposed to mention! But I was still nervous. D:
